Scary Moments

Like I said before, Poppa was usually in good spirits. And like I said before, seconds can mean everything!

One day, I hadn't been there long. Everything seemed to be going ok, nothing major happening. Just a lazy KY day. Critter was sitting at the table, Poppa was somewhere in the house and I had just came in the back door. I think I was getting ready to tell Critter something, but Poppa came from the hall with a different look on his face. One I hadn't seen. He headed straight for me and before I could even comprehend the look he had me by the upper arms, pretty tight. He was staring me straight in the eye and as much as I wanted to look away, to just glance at Critter for a moment, I didn't dare. The look told me to be careful!

I know it couldn't have been more than a few seconds, tho it felt like more, we stared at each other. Several things went through my mind, "Block, DON'T hit!" was one of them. Another was, "he's gonna pitch me right out the back door." And with that thought, a little voice saying... I hope he puts enough into it that I end up in the yard, and not somewhere on the concrete steps.

Then, the look changed. There was the beautiful and kind blue eyes I had been seeing all day. He pulled me close, gave me a hug then turned and walked away.

Critter and I both let out the huge breath we'd both been holding. The same things had gone through her head.

I was lucky.. I'll tell a story of Critter getting whacked. Cause it was pretty funny (not for the knots on her head). But after this one time, I don't think I ever felt like he was going to hit me or chunk me.

Maybe your pappa went in & out of his emotions or other place and staring into your eyes softened him up.
